Close-up of A “human shield”
Last year, he carried books. This year, he carries water.
Last year, he carried books. This year, he carries water.
He used to sift through his class notes, now he sifts through rubble. Meet Hazem, a student at the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza City. He came from what was once a well-off family. His father was an engineer, his grandfather a judge. He dreamed of building a stable life. That future is gone—bombed into dust. The conflict with Israel has cut his education short, and put his future on hold.
Hazem now spends his days walking through destroyed streets to find firewood, carrying heavy jugs of water for miles under the blazing sun, just to bring a few drops home.
His family lives under siege: no food, no clean water, no electricity, no gas, no medicine. Some days they eat once. Some days not at all. His youngest brother cries from hunger at night. Hazem has nothing to give him. “Not milk, not bread, not even a biscuit.”
Hazem is not asking for luxury. He is asking for survival. Look past what you’ve been told about this war, and remember: ‘Human Shields’ are human beings. They deserve dignity, no matter the circumstances.
“I would like to tell the American people not to forget us and to support us in our ordeal. We are in dire need of you. ”
